"Dreaming in Colors borrowed from the Ocean” - Seascape Photography by Jane Haslam
From Friday 11th October LAND Gallery is pleased to present a new showcase featuring the seascape photography of Gallery owner Jane Haslam.
Jane is originally from England which, being a small island nation, meant that all manner of coastlines were quickly and easily available to her lens. Unfortunately Pawling is a little less convenient and whilst the Connecticut or NYC shores are fairly close and the Hudson River is tidal, none have what Jane looks for when she needs a seascape fix, for that she has to plan a little more by going further afield. This showcase, therefore features recent images taken during Jane's ongoing exploration of two distinct New England coastlines - The beaches and dunes of Cape Cod in Massachusetts / The rocky and rugged shores of Acadia in Maine. Both regions feature the rhythm of the Atlantic Ocean, it's moods, sounds, salty air, light as Jane says "somehow it feels like I’m still connected to my roots as I watch waves that have travelled the 3500 miles from my old home to break along the shore of my new home".
Each photograph started out as a fairly typical walk with her camera, mainly at sunrise or sunset, some of the images are true to the original scene others are a little more experimental in an attempt to convey her mood. "Dune" has been chosen as the centerpiece of this show where Jane has taken a normal sunrise image taken one Spring morning on Nauset beach in Cape Cod and reimagined it into a simplified scene of tone and color that superbly compliments the serenity of the morning.
LAND Gallery partners with the Sherman Artists Association who organize monthly exhibitions of curated artwork from amongst their members. Each show begins on the 1st of the month
“The Sensual Side of Birds” – Photographs by Jeff Ginsburg and Lu Li
Artists Talk: Saturday, October 19th 1.30 - 2.30pm
LAND Gallery in Pawling, New York and the Sherman Artists Association are pleased to announce a new show “The Sensual Side of Birds” – Photographs by Jeff Ginsburg and Lu Li. Their bird photography illustrate a strong connection between the photographers and their wild subjects. The show is from October 3 – 27.
Growing up in very different worlds, Ginsburg and Li both share a love of travel, nature and photography. Li's fascination with photography began as a child in China. After years of saving she was able to travel and photograph the exotic lands of China during college breaks. She earned a bachelor’s degree in radar engineering from China's top engineering college and then became the first female to lead a major development team at the Chinese Navy's Research Institute. Li earned a master's degree in Computer Science at CUNY and implemented next-generation cell phone systems.
"I think the camera often produces images more compelling than the actual subject. I love spending hours quietly watching and recording my wild ducks and birds", says Li. "In fact, I feel I'm one of them through my adoration and feelings of strong connection. I think my photos capture their indescribable beauty."
Ginsburg grew up in Danbury and has been creatively "improving" photographs since building a basement darkroom when he was eleven years old. He earned a bachelor's degree in Bioengineering at Duke University and while there worked for four years as the photographer for their daily paper, developing and printing in their darkrooms as well as completing a rigorous photography course. He has a master's degree in Electrical Engineering from Washington University, St Louis and then worked in Boston as a biomedical engineer in research and development. Later he moved to Manhattan to create a workflow and reporting system at Morgan Stanley.
"I believe every photo must have an emotional impact," says Ginsburg when asked what his guiding principle has been throughout his years of photography.
Li and Ginsberg are both retired living in the woods on Squantz Pond and enjoying travel. As well as photography they lead a rich cultural life with pursuits including music, language, creative writing and sailing. Ginsburg is a member of the Sherman Artists Association, Great Hollow Photographers Club, Sherman Writers Group and the Candlewood Sailing Club.
